What are crooked teeth?

Crooked teeth can take many forms. Generally speaking, teeth that aren't uniformly arranged in the jaw are referred to as crooked. Tipped or rotated teeth, or teeth that have grown in the wrong position, also fall into the category of “crooked teeth”.

Crooked teeth FAQs

How are crooked teeth corrected?

Extend Extend

Crooked teeth can only be corrected with braces. Conventional braces with brackets are suitable for this treatment. If it's mostly the front teeth that are tilted, then clear braces are a popular alternative.

If the adult teeth grow in crooked, this problem is often addressed in childhood. However, adults can correct their crooked teeth as well.

What causes crooked teeth?

Extend Extend

Our teeth continue to shift throughout our entire lives. This means that your teeth might only become crooked in adulthood. The causes of crooked teeth can be quite different between adults and children.

  • Anatomical proportions: If the size relationship between the jaw and the teeth is not optimal, the teeth push against each other and may become crooked.
  • Gapped teeth: If patients have a gap between their teeth and do not have it treated, neighbouring teeth can move into the free area in the jaw, tilt in or become crooked.
  • Periodontitis: If gingivitis (gum inflammation) is left untreated, the periodontium weakens, and teeth might migrate or tilt.
  • Bad habits: habits such as nail biting, tongue or lip pressing and teeth grinding can also cause misaligned teeth.

In adults, the front teeth in the lower jaw are often prone to shifting. This phenomenon is called mesial drift and indicates a natural migration of the incisors towards the midline.

How to prevent crooked teeth?

Extend Extend

If you want to prevent crooked teeth, there are a few tips to follow starting from the primary dentition. If the deciduous teeth are extracted early, it is recommended to insert space holders until the change of teeth is complete. The same applies to gaps in the permanent dentition, which should be taken care of by a dentist to prevent neighbouring teeth from leaning into the gap.

If teeth become loose due to periodontitis or an accident, they should be fixed with a retainer to avoid tooth migration and tilting. To prevent damage to the jaw and teeth from clenching and grinding, the patient should wear a grinding guard.

After successfully completing an orthodontic treatment with braces or Aligners, it is recommended to apply a wire retainer. This ensures that the achieved tooth position is maintained in the long term.

Does health insurance cover treatment for crooked teeth?

Extend Extend

This depends on the severity of the malocclusion. The best thing to do is to contact your health insurance company directly to find out if they cover the costs of correcting crooked teeth.

Is it possible to have Veneers if your teeth are crooked?

Extend Extend

This depends on the degree of crookedness. If your teeth are too crooked, Veneers often don't work. They hide the malocclusion and create a good-looking result, but the teeth stay in the same position. In many cases it is recommended to undergo Aligner treatment before getting Veneers. This ensures that your teeth are restored both aesthetically and functionally. Your bestsmile dentist will be happy to advise you on this.
